AI systems glossary

AI work gets vague quickly when everyone uses the same words differently. This glossary defines the terms Oliver Labs uses when reviewing and building business systems.

The goal is clarity before scope.

AI system means workflow plus context Automation means repeated execution Integration means connected tools Approval paths keep judgment human

Definition

AI system: software that uses AI inside a real workflow with context, boundaries, and handoffs. Automation: a repeated step performed by software. Integration: a connection between tools or data sources. Workflow redesign: changing how work moves before adding more software. Operating layer: the surface where a team sees, moves, and manages work.

Human approval path: the part of a system where AI can prepare or recommend, but a person confirms the action.

What Oliver Labs looks for

In an AI Systems Review, these definitions keep the conversation honest. If the company needs integration, calling it an AI agent will not help. If the workflow is unclear, calling it automation will not fix it.

Precise language leads to better scope and better systems.

Checklist

Before a build, define the workflow, the user, the source of truth, the AI role, the human approval path, the failure path, and the measurable outcome.
